This body of artworks explores perception that other people have about me. According to dictionary Perception is defined as a process of gathering sensory information about something and assigning meaning to it. As a young black man from the rural area, when even I am in urban spaces, I am being viewed as a threat or criminal. Throughout this body of work, I depict myself dressed in different attires in various urban spaces so that I can be accepted by other people. After reviewing the work of Sam Nhlengethwa, I felt inspired by his collages that comment on urban social settings. I chose to do embossing because it relates to the invisible scars that people’s perception creates on me.
